Laser Center of Competence Enhances DED Capabilities

Additive Manufacturing technologies are playing a pivotal role in the new space race. The size and complexity of 3D-printed components, such as rocket nozzles, continue to increase while meeting stringent requirements for durability and lightweight design. Innovative manufacturing techniques, such as Directed Energy Deposition (DED) and other laser deposition technologies, have become essential to advancing Additive Manufacturing capabilities.

Over the past few years, the Laser Center of Competence has established itself as an innovation hub for various laser deposition technologies, including DED. Recently, we expanded our manufacturing capacities by growing our engineering team and enhancing our equipment portfolio. The latest addition, a highly precise 7-axis 3D Laser Center Gantry from ARNOLD Lasersysteme Ravensburg, is the fourth machine in the center. This advanced equipment enables the construction of intricate structures while maintaining precise temperature control throughout the entire process. Through continuous development, Oerlikon has industrialized robust and repeatable processes at scale for series production.

Under the leadership of Dr. Arkadi Zikin, the Laser Center of Competence consistently pushes the boundaries of laser technologies. Our team combines the energy of young talent with the expertise of seasoned professionals, fostering a dynamic environment where innovation thrives. We actively engage customers throughout the entire manufacturing journey, providing support from feasibility studies to industrialization.

While aerospace remains a cornerstone of our expertise, the Laser Center of Competence is also witnessing growing demand for complex structures across other sectors, including oil and gas, general industry, and advanced aeronautics. These industries are leveraging laser deposition technologies to address challenges such as producing large-scale, intricate components with reliable and efficient processes.

One of our most groundbreaking initiatives is the development of additive manufacturing processes for components in rocket propulsion systems. These components, over one meter tall with wall thicknesses under one millimeter, are lighter, more complex, and produced rapidly with robust processes. Features such as integrated cooling channels highlight the advanced manufacturing capabilities that deliver high-performance solutions across industries.

Laser deposition technologies, including DED, work by precisely depositing material onto a substrate using a focused energy source, creating intricate three-dimensional parts layer by layer. These technologies offer advantages such as high deposition rates, minimal material waste, and excellent mechanical properties, making them ideally suited for industries requiring durable, lightweight solutions. They enable us to enhance the performance of critical components while significantly reducing production times.

As one of Europe’s leading hubs for laser deposition technologies, the Laser Center of Competence is committed to delivering exceptional customer support, enabling faster production times, and achieving even greater precision in manufacturing. With our expertise, advanced technologies, and proven success in industrialization, we are proud to contribute to the future of aerospace and a diverse range of industries.
